Huey Lewis played in a number of groups after dropping out of school his junior year to concentrate entirely on music. The group Huey eventually formed “Huey Lewis and the News” was among the very well-known musical groups of the 1980s. The group had tons of hit singles as well as a string of incredibly popular music videos. The group’s 1983 album “Sports” sold over 10 million records globally making it one of the very well-known pop records ever. Arguably, the groups most well-known tune was “Power of Love”. The tune was featured prominently through the hit film “Back to the Future”.

Huey Lewis Net Worth $20 Million Dollars

HL&N also composed and performed an original tune called “Back in Time” for the 2nd Back to the Future Film. Huey Lewis is additionally an actor that has appeared in films like “Duets” with Gweneth Paltrow, “Short Cuts” and “World”. Huey also formed a short cameo in the initial Back to the Future film as a group audition judge. In the film, Marty plays an early variant of “Power of Love” for his audition. Lewis, playing a judge, cuts Marty away early to the audition using the now famous line “you are just too darn loud”. Interestingly, when the scene was really filmed, the tune hadn’t been completely written or recorded yet. Huey as well as the group had to supply Michael J Fox having an early sample of what would eventually be a really well-known riff. Huey Lewis is still quite popular now, touring internationally through the entire year.

Interesting Facts

1"The Power of Love" from Back to the Future (1985) earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
2His father, Hugh Anthony Cregg Jr., was an American of Irish ancestry, and his mother, Maria Magdalena, was from Warsaw, Poland.
3Has a small cameo in Back to the Future (1985), a film for which he also contributed two songs.
4Tattoo (Givin' It All Up For Love), on the Picture This album (Huey's second album), is a cover of a Phil Lynott song (whom he had played with prior to forming the News).
5Played as a backing harmonica musician for Thin Lizzy, and for their vocalist, Phil Lynott, on Phil's solo recordings. Lewis is the harmonica player on the now-legendary Thin Lizzy live album, "Live and Dangerous".
6Played in a band called Clover prior to forming the News.
7According to a Behind the Music (1997) interview, his favorite album he ever recorded was "Small World" (1988), which was a commercial failure.
8During an interview, he said that he learned how to play the harmonica while hitchhiking across Europe.
9Contrary to popular belief, Lewis did not forbid "Hip To Be Square" from being included on the CD soundtrack release of the movie American Psycho (2000) . He licensed the song for use in the film, but the producers failed to secure the appropriate rights to put it on the soundtrack, forcing it to be recalled and the song removed (though early pressings had already been shipped to stores and sold).
10Huey Lewis & The News won the British Phonographic Industry Award for International Group in 1986.
11The original name of his band was "Huey Lewis and the American Express". It was later changed to Huey Lewis & The News, due to legal reasons.
12On the song "Hip to be Square", from the album "Fore!", the backup singers at the end of the song include San Fransisco 49er stars Dwight Clark, Ronnie Lott and Joe Montana.
13Enjoys playing golf.
14Huey Lewis successfully sued Ray Parker Jr. for plagiarizing the medley to his song "I Want A New Drug". They settled out of court and agreed not to talk about the case in public. In 2001, Lewis talked about the case in public when he revealed that Parker paid to settle the suit on an episode of VH1's Behind the Music (1997). Parker then sued Lewis for violating the terms of their agreement.
15When the band "Clover" broke up, he formed Huey Lewis & The News, the so-called 80s Band.
16Attended Cornell University, majoring in engineering, but dropped out after his junior year, because he was in a band called Clover and they were preparing for rock stardom. Clover (minus Huey Lewis) provided the instrumentals for Elvis Costello's debut album, "My Aim Is True".
17Huey dropped out of Cornell University to spend a year living in Europe playing the harp.
18He has a brother named Jeff.
19His parents divorced when he was 13.
20In 1967 he graduated from Lawrenceville Prep at the age of 16 in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
21Scored a perfect 800 on his math SATs.
22Has two children, son Austin (born 1985) and daughter Kelly (born 1983).
23Attended Monte Vista High School in Danville, CA.
24He is the leader of Huey Lewis & The News.

1A lot has been written and said about why he was so great, but I think the best way to appreciate his greatness is just to go back and play some of the old records. Time has a way of being very unkind to old records, but Elvis' keep getting better and better.
