He sang in his church as a young child and was ordained as a minister in age 10. He took up the drums and sang using the Edison Mastersingers. He dropped from school in eleventh grade and recorded his first tune. He played drums for The Cadillacs before being a lead singer. Their tune “should you not Understand Me by Now” became a top 10 hit and made it to #1 on the soul singles graph. Pendergrass went solo and released his first record in 1977. He’d five back-to-back platinum records from 1977 to 1981.

Teddy retired in the music business in 2006 and was observed in 2007 for 25 years since his injury. Teddy began the Teddy Pendergrass Coalition to assist others with spinal cord injuries. Teddy was nominated for four Grammy Awards in his career. Teddy Pendergrass died of respiratory failure on January 13, 2010.
