However, despite their enormous success, Wyclef Jean left the group in order to start his career as a solo vocalist. In 1997, the singer released his debut solo album which was called “The Carnival”. The album showed that Wyclef Jean was competent to become a successful solo vocalist because the album was certified Platinum.

Three years after, Wyclef Jean released his second album, which was called “The Ecleftic: 2 Sides to a Book”. Also, in his second album, Wyclef Jean collaborated with many other musicians in his tunes, such as Kenny Rogers, Mary J. Blige, Earth, Wind and Fire as well as The Rock. Jean is Pras’s cousin and a fellow Haitian immigrant. The Fugees signed to Ruffhouse Records, which released the group’s debut album, Blunted on Reality. It sold fairly well, peaking at #49 on the U.S. Popular 100 and selling over 2 million copies worldwide. The followup album – The Score – sold over 18 million copies world-wide, eventually becoming a multi-platinum, Grammy-winning album.

Jean filed for candidacy in the 2010 Haitian presidential election, although the Electoral Commission later ruled him ineligible to stand as he had not met the requirement to have been resident in Haiti for five years.

In addition to being a successful musician, Wyclef Jean also got involved into politics, when in 2010 he nominee to become a Haitian president. However, he was removed from the election because the rules stated that he had to be living in Haiti for five years at least.

Wyclef Jean’s efforts at earthquake aid, highly publicized in 2010 throughout Haiti and the United States, were directed through his charitable organization, Yele Haiti. The charity, which performed a variety of charitable works in Haiti between 2005 and 2010, effectively closed in 2012.
